This is a question that many patients wonder about and feel concerned about. Today, Asst. Prof. (Special) Dr. Songpol Phutthasiri (Medical Licence No. 23966), a reproductive medicine specialist, is here to help explain it clearly.

A mosaic embryo occurs due to abnormalities during the embryo’s own cell division after fertilisation. This means that some cells divide normally, while others divide abnormally. Simply put, a mosaic embryo contains two groups of cells within the same embryo: normal cells with 46 chromosomes and abnormal cells with missing or extra chromosomes.

Can transferring a mosaic embryo lead to pregnancy? Will the baby be normal?
According to research and reported cases, transferring a mosaic embryo may still result in pregnancy and the birth of a healthy baby. This is because embryos may have a special ability to self-correct by directing abnormal cells toward the placenta and allowing healthy cells to continue developing into the baby. As a result, the baby may be born with normal chromosomes. However, mosaic embryo transfer should only be considered after careful assessment and consultation with a reproductive medicine specialist.

Every step of treatment must be carefully evaluated and planned by a specialist doctor to help increase the chance of success for every family.
✅ Selection priority: Normal embryos are always selected for transfer first.
✅ Last option: If there are no normal embryos remaining, a mosaic embryo may be considered for transfer. Pregnancy may still be possible, but the chance of success is generally lower than with a normal embryo.
